THE TEAM

CARL RECSEI - ARIEL UNIVERSITY

Carl is from Sydney, Australia. He completed a B.Sc. in Chemistry at The University of Sydney, with Honours and a Ph.D. from the same institution under the supervision of Dr. Chris McErlean. His doctoral research was in the total synthesis of halogenated, marine natural products using organocatalysis. Currently he works in the laboratory of Prof. Mark Gandelman at the Technion, where his research focusses on developing cross-coupling methodologies for germinal, dihalogenated alkanes, with a view to the production of chiral alkyl halides. His research interests centre on the production of chiral organohalogens with a view to the synthesis of complex molecular architectures.

ITAI PITUSSI - Treasurer

ARIEL UNIVERSITY

Itay Pitussi born in Hadera, Israel, and completed his B.Sc. in chemistry and his M.Sc. in Computational chemistry and Electrochemistry under the supervision of Prof. Haya Korenwitz and Dr. Alex Schechter at Ariel University.

Itay is currently a Ph.D. candidate under the same supervisors.

OLGA CHOVNIK - WEIZMANN

Olga completed her B.Sc. in molecular biochemistry at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. She began her graduate studies at Weizmann Institute of Science in the organic chemistry department under the supervision of Dr. Rafal Klajn. Her M.Sc. project involved working with photoswitchable nanoparticles as a model system to crystallization processes. In 2014 she began her Ph.D. in the group of Milko van der Boom focusing on halogen bond-based 3D networks. Olga represented the Weizmann Institute of Science in the first Israeli academic rowing competition in 2015, and the Israel Chemical Society in the 2015 Mountain to Valley relay race.

ORI GREEN - TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY

Ori Green was born in Kyriat Ono, Israel, in 1986. He received his B.Sc. in chemistry in 2013 from Tel Aviv University. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the organic chemistry department of Tel Aviv University  under the supervision of Professor Doron Shabat, where he also serves as the TAU representative for the GSD and as the former treasurer.

Past members

OREN MEIRON - CHAIRMAN

BEN GURION UNIVERSITY

Oren Meiron was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and completed his B.Sc. in Biophysics and his M.Sc. in Organic chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Chaim Sukenik at Bar Ilan University.
Before continuing to his Ph.D., Oren worked for 6 years in a biochemical startup called Amorphical where he was the head of CMC, developing novel calcium supplements. Oren is currently a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Dr. Maya Bar-Sadan at Ben-Gurion University. His research focuses on doping and alloying of transition metal dichalcogenide nanoparticles for photocatalysis.

SHIFRA LANSKY - HEBREW UNIVERSITY

Shifra Lansky completed in 2013 her BSc in chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem summa cum laude. During her undergraduate studies, she began research in the lab of Prof. Gil Shoham as part of the “Amirim” excellence program and is currently pursuing this research in a direct track to Ph.D. program. Shifra uses X-ray crystallography to determine the atomic-resolution structures and mechanisms of proteins, focusing specifically on proteins that are part of carbohydrate utilization systems in thermophilic bacteria. Shifra also enjoys very much playing the violin and is currently studying with Mr. Roi Shiloah, who teaches at the Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance.

GILA LEVI - Secretary

BAR ILAN UNIVERSITY

Gila Levi was born in 1988 in Casablanca, Morocco, she made Aliyah in 2006. She received here B.Sc in advanced materials engineering at Azrieli College of Engineering, Jerusalem in 2011. She graduated M.Sc in chemistry in 2013, under the supervision of Prof.Mastai at Bar-Ilan university. Gila is currently pursuing her Ph.D investigating new chiral inorganic nanostructures.
